Disenchanting Trust: Instrumental Reason, Algorithmic Governance, and China’s Emerging Social Credit System

Digital technologies have provided governments across the world with new tools of political and social control. The development algorithmic governance in China is particularly alarming, where plans been released to develop a digital Social Credit System (SCS). Still an exploratory stage, SCS, as collection national local pilots, framed officially all-encompassing project aimed at building trust society through regulation both economic behaviors. Grounded case China’s this article interrogates application rating expanding areas everyday life lens Frankfurt School’s critique instrumental reason. It explores how SCS reduces moral relational dimension interactions, technologies, thriving on economy characterized by impersonality, impede formation trustworthiness virtues. rationality underlying undermines ontology trust, forecloses its transformative power, disrupts civic interactions that are non-instrumental nature.
